Harry Potter Casts Spell on Audiences

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE was far and away the winner at the box office, earning $77.8 million over the weekend and in five days brought in $158.02M for Warner Bros. (vfx by ILM and Double Negative and CEG Media, Cinesite, Foreign Office, Gentle Giant Studios, Kerner Optical, Moving Picture Company, Plowman Craven & Associates, Rising Sun Pictures and The Visual Effects Company).

ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS (Fox, animation by Blue Sky Studios) didn't budge from its second place finish, earning $17.6M with a three-week cume of $151.9M.

Third place went to TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN (Paramount/DreamWorks) with $13.7M and a total four-week gross of $363.8M. The Michael Bay actioner featured vfx from ILM and Asylum VFX, Digital Domain, Kerner Optical and Proof.

Last week's winner, BRUNO (Universal), dropped almost 73 percent in its second week with a fourth place finish with $8.3M and a two-week take of $49.5M.

Fifth place went to Sandra Bullock/Ryan Reynolds' comedy THE PROPOSAL (Disney, vfx by Brickyard VFX) with $8.3M and a five-week take of $128.08M.

Again only dropping about 18 percent was Warner Bros. THE HANGOVER with $8.18M and a sixth place spot. In seven weeks the comedy has earned $235.7M.

Universal's historical drama PUBLIC ENEMIES (vfx by CafeFX, Pixel Playground) brought in another $7.7M and in three weeks has earned $79.6M.

The animated UP (Disney/Pixar) placed eighth again this week with $3.2M and in eight weeks has a cume of $279.6M.

Weeper MY SISTER'S KEEPER (Warner Bros.) made $2.8M for ninth place and has a total gross of $41.5M.

And rounding out the top ten is teen comedy I LOVE YOU BETH COOPER (Fox) with $2.8M and a two-week cume of $10.3M.

In animated features, MONSTERS VS. ALIENS (DreamWorks Animation/Paramount) pulled in another $185,191 for a total 17 week gross of $197.5M. Lionsgate's BATTLE FOR TERRA made $18,739 and in 12 weeks has earned $1.6M. $9.99 from Regent made another $2,033 for a total take in 10 weeks of $33,217.
