Hand-Drawn ‘Confusion Through Sand’ Short Now Online

Hand-drawn short film from Orana Films, the team behind the 2011 viral sensation ‘(Notes on) Biology,’ debuts on PBS prior to its release online.

Orana Films has released online, in its entirety, Confusion Through Sand, the follow-up from the team behind the 2011 viral sensation (Notes on) Biology and 2013’s Euphonia.

An official selection at the 2014 SXSW and Hiroshima film festivals, and a winner at New York’s Animation Block Party, Confusion Through Sand debuted on PBS Monday night prior to its release online. The nine-minute short follows a nineteen-year-old who finds himself alone in a hostile desert, scared as hell, and trained to react.

Directed and animated by Danny Madden, Confusion Through Sand was entirely hand animated on recycled paper. Madden drew over 8,000 frames to create the expressionistic short film, which features wildly kinetic camera moves:
