‘Gravity’ Named Outstanding British Film at BAFTA Awards

Alfonso Cuarón’s 3D space epic Gravity leads last night’s BAFTA Film Awards with six wins, including the prize for Outstanding British Film.

Alfonso Cuarón’s 3D space epic Gravity led last night’s BAFTA Film Awards with six wins, including the prize for Outstanding British Film. Despite its Mexican director and U.S. cast, the American-backed Gravity was filmed in the U.K. and its widely-acclaimed visual effects were made in Britain.

Taking home more awards than any other film, Gravity also picked up prizes for Best Visual Effects, Cinematography, Sound, and Original Music, while Alfonso Cuarón won Best Director. The other contenders for Best Visual Effects included The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Iron Man 3, Pacific Rim and Star Trek Into Darkness.

In a tie with American Hustle for the most nominations this year, Gravity is nominated for ten awards at the Oscars, including Best Picture. In the Best Visual Effects category, Gravity is pitted against The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Iron Man 3, The Lone Ranger and Star Trek Into Darkness.
