Anime director Mamoru Oshii (GHOST IN THE SHELL) will helm another live-action film, according to VARIETY. Breaking an eight-year hiatus from live-action, Oshii will make ASSAULT GIRLS, starring Oscar nominee Rinko Kikuchi (BABEL), Meisa Kuroki (ONE MISSED CALL FINAL) and Hinako Saeki (THE RING 2: SPIRAL).
The three women will play post-apocalyptic hunters of gigantic morphing creatures called sand whales.
Oshii's last live-action film was AVALON, a sci-fi extravaganza. His most recent animated film was SKY CRAWLERS, which had a limited theatrical release in the U.S. last year.
ASSAULT GIRLS will hit theaters in Japan on Dec. 19.
