Garfield celebrates his 25th birthday with a book signing and exhibit with his creator, Jim Davis, at Animazing Gallery from 6-9:00 pm on June 18, 2003, in New York City. Comic creator and animation producer Davis will sign copies of IN DOG YEARS I'D BE DEAD, his just released book celebrating Garfields 25th anniversary ($35.00). Original paintings, classic GARFIELD cartoon strips and original animation cels and drawings will be on exhibit and for sale.
The GARFIELD cartoon strip debuted on June 19, 1978 in 41 U.S. newspapers. Today, more than 260,000,000 people worldwide read the strip. Guinness World Records recently named GARFIELD "The Most Widely Syndicated Comic Strip in the World" (it appears in 2,570 newspapers globally). Davis controls GARFIELD licensing through his PAWS, Inc.
The strip has been made into a number of Emmy award-winning TV specials and a daytime series, produced by Film Roman, PAWS and Lee Mendelson Films. Twentieth Century Fox will release a live-action/CG animated GARFIELD movie in June 2004. Rhythm & Hues is the primary studio doing visual effects on the movie director Peter Hewitt is adapting from the syndicated cartoon strip.
