F/X Flicks Fade At The US Box Office

With the special effects-light fall schedule starting, the top two spots were claimed by newcomers BRING IT ON and THE ART OF WAR, leaving THE CELL holding on to third. The stylized shocker, with primary visual effects by Toybox, grossed US$9.68 million, bringing its cume to $33.75 million. Meanwhile, SPACE COWBOYS continues to orbit around the top with a stop in fourth this weekend. After four weeks in theatres, the wrinkled space wranglers, with primary visual effects by ILM, lassoed another $6.51 million, raising its cume to $63.71 million. In sixth, WHAT LIES BENEATH scared up another $4.61 million. The ghostly gallop, with primary visual effects by SPI, has a cume of $130.9 million. Finishing in ninth, NUTTY PROFESSOR II: THE KLUMPS rounded up an additional $3.56 million. The fat farm frolic, with primary visual effects by Double Negative Ltd., has amassed a total of $110 million thus far. Tumbling yet again from #7 to #12, HOLLOW MAN materialized $2.81 million. The invisible intruder, with primary visual effects by The Ranch Entertainment, Tippett Studios and Sony Imageworks, has surfaced $66.56 million. BLESS THE CHILD descended to unlucky #13, with a gross of $2.71 million. The anti-Christ adventure, with primary visual effects by Centropolis Effects and Manex Visual Effects, has summoned $22.75 million. Slipping three slots to #14, GODZILLA 2000 stomped its way to another $1.74 million. In 15th place, X-MEN excavated an additional $1.37 million. The mutant menagerie, with primary visual effects by Cinesite, CORE Digital, Digital Domain, Hammerhead Productions, Kleiser-Walczak Co., Matte World and POP Film, has made $151.2 million so far. Washing up at #16, THE PERFECT STORM landed $1.21 million. The seafaring saga, with primary visual effects by ILM, has a cume of $175.6 million. Falling five slots to 19th place, SCARY MOVIE laughed its way to another $682,288. The long-in-the-tooth laugher, with primary visual effects by Centropolis Effects, has piled up $148.5 million thus far. Finishing off the top twenty, CHICKEN RUN ran home with $575,670. The Tweedy Farm troubles, with stop-motion animation by Aardman Animations and additional 3D animation by Computer Film Company, London, has accumulated $102.9 million. Other animated and special effects laden films finishing in the top fifty were: THE PATRIOT at #21, with a gross of $566,283 and a cume of $111 million; GLADIATOR at #22, with a gross of $450,919 and a cume of $182.7 million; POKEMON THE MOVIE 2000 at #26, with a gross of $268,204 and a cume of $42.5 million; THOMAS AND THE MAGIC RAILROAD at #27, with a gross of $229,012 and a cume of $15.12 million; THE ADVENTURES OF ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE at #32, with a gross of $195,300 and a cume of $25.34 million; FREQUENCY at #35, with a gross of $141,809 and a cume of $44.67 million; GONE IN 60 SECONDS at #40, with a gross of $119,005 and a cume of $96.93 million; T-REX: BACK TO THE CRETACEOUS at #41, with a gross of $111,763 and a cume of $33.71 million; ALIEN ADVENTURE at #45, with a gross of $75,257 and a cume of $2.49 million; and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 at #48, with a gross of $70,193 and a cume of $212.9 million.
