French Graduation Film Will Delight Miyazaki Fans

2D-animated diploma film by Gwenn Germain uses Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki, designer and concept artist Syd Mead, and French comic illustrator Jean “Mœbius” Giraud as influences.

Making the rounds on the Internet over the past month is Celles et Ceux des Cimes et Cieux (Girls and Guys from the Summits and the Skies), a 2D animated diploma film by Gwenn Germain.

A fifth-year student at Créapole ESDI in Paris, Germain frames the two-and-a-half minute short in the form of a trailer for an imaginary sci-fi feature. The film, which took five months to complete, follows “A young boy who lives in a village on a giant tree,” according to the video description, who falls into the forest where “he meets two strange natives who will help him to go back home.”

Germain cites Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki as one of his major influences for the project, along with Blade Runner, Aliens and TRON designer Syd Mead, and French comic illustrator Jean “Mœbius” Giraud.

You can check out more of Germain’s work in his previous animation, Bococo, along with his illustration portfolio on deviantART.
