Disney and director Sam Raimi want to discuss with James Franco about taking the lead in OZ, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Originally, Robert Downey Jr. was cast as the wonderful wizard, but dropped out. Disney then moved to Johnny Depp, but he has now passed.
The WIZARD OF OZ prequel finds a young magician whipped off to Oz in a hot air balloon where he encounters two wicked witches ruling the realm.
Joe Roth is producing the film and hopes to have it into production by the second half of the year. The filmmakers are rushing to get the film in the can and beat other competing OZ projects at other studios.
