Four Brothers Captures Weak Box Office

Paramounts action-packed FOUR BROTHERS (with vfx support from Mr. X and Creature Effects) debuted in the top spot for the weekend ended Aug. 14, 2005, with $21.1M. But the slump continued as the top 12 movies were off by 16% from last years numbers. Another newcomer, Universals frightener, THE SKELETON KEY (with vfx from Rhythm + Hues), bowed in second with $16M. Sinking to third was Warner Bros. THE DUKES OF HAZZARD, which managed only $13M for a two-week cume of $57.4M. New Lines WEDDING CRASHERS landed in fourth place with $11.8M and $163.8M to date. Sonys comedy, DEUCE BIGALOW: EUROPEAN GIGOLO, debuted in fifth with $9.6M.

Coming in sixth at $7.4M was Warner Bros. CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (with delightful vfx from MPC, Framestore CFC, Cinesite and Digital Domain), which has now reached $183.9M. Warner Independent Pictures MARCH OF THE PENGUINS, the high- flying doc, settled for seventh place with $6.8M and a cume of $37.7M. Buena Vistas SKY HIGH (with vfx from Asylum VFX, Furious FX and Lola Visual Effects) followed in eighth with $6.3M for a total of $43.4M. Warner Bros. romantic comedy, MUST LOVE DOGS, fell to ninth with $4.5M and $34.6M. Rounding out the top 10 was Miramaxs historically-based World War II drama, THE GREAT RAID, which bowed with $3.3M.

Hayao Miyazakis HOWLS MOVING CASTLE collected another $24,842 for a cume of $4.5M for Buena Vista (with Pixars Pete Docter and Disneys Rick Dempsey overseeing the American version). It now ranks seventh on the all-time list of anime titles. Box office information obtained from boxofficemojo.com.
