Wayfare Dives into Sanctum
After five years of attempting to make SANCTUM through the traditional studio system, producer Andrew Wight and James Cameron brought their project to New York-based Wayfare Ent. in early 2009. Wayfare moved quickly and over the next six months worked to package and prep the film with a plan to shoot in Australia in the biggest tank in the Southern hemisphere. Wayfare fully financed and greenlit SANCTUM for an Oct. 2009 start, seeing the huge potential of the 3-D sector and the value of Cameron's involvement. Working with Wight on set in Australia, Wayfare oversaw all aspects of the production and aided director Alister Grierson in realizing his vision for SANCTUM.
Wayfare worked with Universal and Relativity to craft the marketing and promotion of what is ultimately a unique filmgoing experience and is at the vanguard of 3-D filmmaking. In financing and producing SANCTUM, Wayfare (spearheaded by co-founder/CEO Ben Browning) worked with Cameron, Wight his partner on all their deep see expeditions and 3-D films and the behind-the-scenes team and technology developed for AVATAR to take cutting-edge 3-D technology to the awe-inspiring world of cave diving. The film was conceived in 3-D from the ground up and shot on the Cameron/Pace Fusion 3-D Camera System, utilizing two different rigs: a side-by-side rig and a newer, fusion beam-splitter rig that can control both convergence (the point at which the lenses’ sightlines meet) and intraocular (the distance between the lenses), creating a more immersive, pleasing-to-the-eye 3-D experience.
The conventional wisdom is that 3-D is most appropriate for large scale action movies, but 3-D also lends itself better to more claustrophobic environments, like caves; the walls seem to be closing in on the audience, and the grandeur of nature is all the more dynamic. The setting of SANCTUM was married perfectly to the 3-D experience and the technology Cameron developed.
Chuck Comisky, a 3-D innovator who worked on Cameron’s 3-D documentaries as well as AVATAR, worked from a 3-D edit suite during production, calling out intraocular and convergence settings to the pullers on set - designing the 3-D style of SANCTUM.
The team assembled included experts on both 3-D and cave diving, the only crew who knew how to shoot 3-D in such punishing underwater conditions as the sets of SANCTUM.

Upcoming Wayfare releases an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s multi-award winning THE GRAVEYARD BOOK, with Neil Jordan set to direct.
