In a lackluster box office weekend, teen thriller SWIMFAN took the top spot with a mere $11.3M, while last week's number one, SIGNS, fell to fourth. Overall, the top 12 films grossed $59.1 million, making it the worst weekend take of the year, according to tracking firm Exhibitor Relations. In second was indie sensation MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, with $10.4M and $95.8M total, and in third was the crime drama CITY BY THE SEA, debuting with $8.9M. SIGNS, with visual effects by ILM, grossed just $7.9M this weekend but that was enough to help M. Night Shyamalan's alien sensation cross the $200M mark, making it the fourth highest-grossing film of 2002, with $205.7M to date. Action flick XXX, with visual effects by Digital Domain, earned another $5.2M for $130.7M and fifth place, and SPY KIDS 2 slipped to sixth, with $3M for a five-week total of $73.9M. Sony took two of its biggest hits of the summer, SPIDER-MAN and MEN IN BLACK II and re-released them this weekend as a double feature. The stunt garnered a so-so reception, with the double-bill earning $2.1M, which was enough for ninth place. According to boxofficeguru.com, the studio will not add the grosses to the existing totals of each film, but instead count it as a separate title. Individually, SPIDER-MAN has grossed $403.7M while MIB2 has taken in $190.6M domestically. Box office information obtain from yahoo.com.
