The voice cast for the 3-D animated indie feature QUANTUM QUEST, made in conjunction with NASA, has been set -- including two Captain Kirks and two Darth Vaders, according to VARIETY.

Financed by Taiwan animation house Digimax, the film is in the $10 million range and features the voices of William Shatner, Christ Pine, James Earl Jones and Hayden Christensen, meaning the old school and new school is being represented. Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong will make his bigscreen debut with his voice in the film slated for an IMAX and a subsequent conventional theatrical release in late 2009.

Samuel L. Jackson, Amanda Peet, Jason Alexander, Sandra Oh, Mark Hamill, Abigail Breslin and Spencer Breslin will also lend their voices.

Dan St. Pierre and Harry Koor are directing from a script by Koor. The film will take the audience to the outer planets and moons of the solar system, following Dave (Pine), a photon who lives in the sun and who is drawn into a galactic battle between the Core (Shatner) and the Void (Hamill).

Digimax's animated sequences will be interspersed with real space images taken from seven ongoing space missions. The film was initiated by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1996 as part of the outreach program of the $3.5 billion Cassini Huygens space mission.

Producers are looking for a distributor in the U.S. for conventional theaters, but Digimax will distribute the film in Asia and Jupiter 9 Productions is handling IMAX and other large-format in all other territories.

The film has been in the works since 1996 with a voice cast that originally included John Travolta and Anne Archer. Koor conveived of the project, but production could not commence until the Cassini Huygens reached its target and sent back its discoveries. NASA released the final images and radar map this year, enabling the film to go forward.

Koor is producing through his Jupiter 9 Productions with Digimax's Helen Pao-Yun Huang and Jeff Tzong-Jer Yang. Exec producers are Tom Teng, Teddy Zee, The Gotham Group's Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Jon Vein.
