Doug Liman has officially inked a deal to direct Warner Bros.' THE THREE MUSKETEERS, reports VARIETY. The studio wants to start production this fall, probably in an effort to beat Summit Ent.’s Paul W.S. Anderson’s version of the Alexandre Dumas tale to the gate.

SHERLOCK HOLMES producer Lionel Wigram is behind the new version of the swashbuckling tale. Peter Straughan (THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS), Bridget O'Connor and Michael Robert Johnson have all taken stabs at the script.

Courtenay Valenti is shepherding for Warner.

The classic story follows young D'Artagnan as he teams up with three veteran musketeers to fight the corrupt Cardinal Richelieu.
