Jackass Kicks The Ring Out Of Top Spot
A movie based on the MTV stunt show JACKASS took the top spot this weekend, booting DreamWorks' suspense flick THE RING down to second place. JACKASS: THE MOVIE debuted with a surprising $22.7M, the third highest grossing October debut ever. THE RING, with visual effects by Method Studios, Rhythm & Hues, Asylum and Tippett Studios, came in second with $18.7M, for a two-week total of $39.4M. Debuting in third with $11.5M was the spooky sea voyage GHOST SHIP, featuring visual effects by Photon VFX. The thriller RED DRAGON, with visual effects by Cinesite, dropped sharply to sixth place in its fourth weekend, earning $4.6M for a cume of $84.9M. It's too close to call for JONAH: A VEGGIETALES MOVIE, but it looks like it has dropped to tenth place just behind romance BROWN SUGAR, with $2.7M for the weekend and $19.5M to date. Disney's limited release of SPIRITED AWAY seems to be winding down. Dropping two locations, the animated fantasy took in $402,000 this weekend and is closing in on just $4M total after six weeks in limited release. It is unclear whether Disney plans to roll out SPIRITED AWAY in any more theaters, but it seems unlikely, particularly because the studio will be releasing its next big animated feature TREASURE PLANET in regular theaters and in IMAX theaters on November 27, 2002.
