Gladiator Gains Japan, Mission Out Maneuvers Dinosaur

In the international box office, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2 remained #1 in Australia by holding off newcomer DINOSAUR, while GLADIATOR gained the top spot in its debut in Japan. DreamWorks’ GLADIATOR claimed new territories in Japan, making $982,911 in its Japanese debut. Elsewhere, GLADIATOR remained at the top in Spain, the U.K., Brazil, Italy and Sweden. The Maximus money-maker grossed $1.89 million in Spain, advancing its three-week cume to $10.05 million. Beating out the opening of BIG MOMMA’S HOUSE in the U.K., GLADIATOR gained another $1.45 million, raising its British cume to $36.3 million. Likewise in Brazil, GLADIATOR edged out MOMMA’S HOUSE’s premiere with a gross of $956,357, bringing its cume there to $5.53 million. After five weeks in theatres, GLADIATOR remains strong in Italy adding another $203,704 to its $7.59 cume. In its fourth week in Sweden, the Roman romp grossed an additional $173,877, bringing its cume their to $2.97 million. GLADIATOR premiered in France at #3, with a gross of $801,509 and fell to 5th place in Hong Kong, with a gross of $44,098, bringing its cume to $1.14 million. Also in Hong Kong, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 premiered at #1, with a gross of $1.78 million. In Australia, the MISSION sequel grossed US$1.66 million in its second full week in release, just nudging out the premiere of DINOSAUR, which made $1.45 million. Thus far, MISSION 2 has grossed $10.02 million in Australia. In addition, GLADIATOR slipped to #4 Down Under with a gross of $807,054, raising its Australian cume to $16.14 million. In Sweden, POKEMON: THE FIRST MOVIE slipped to 9th place with a gross of $14,127, raising its Swedish cume to $1.13 million. Box office reports obtained in THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.
