Up Edged Out of First Place by The Hangover

With the final box office figures released, comedy opener THE HANGOVER (Warner Bros.) narrowly beat Disney-Pixar's UP for first place with $44.979M for the weekend of June 5-7. Pixar's first 3-D feature took flight for another $44.1 million, lifting its cume to $137.2 million.

Newcomer LAND OF THE LOST had to settle for third. Universal's TV show remake hauled in a disappointing $18.8 million. LAND OF THE LOST has visual effects from CafeFX, Gentle Giant Studios, Hammerhead Productions, Rhythm and Hues and Spectral Motion.

Fox's NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN (vfx from CafeFX, Dac Studios, Giant Studios, Image Engine Design and Pixel Playground) arrived in fourth with $14.6 million, making its three-week cume $127.3 million.

Big franchise films took the fifth and sixth slots. Paramount's STAR TREK (vfx by ILM, Lola Visual Effects, Evil Eye Pictures, and Svengali Visual Effects) stayed steady at #5, beaming in another $8.3 million, jetting its cume to $222.7 million. TERMINATOR SALVATION (Warner Bros., vfx by ILM, Matte World Digital, Pixel Liberation Front, Proof, Rising Sun Pictures and Stan Winston Studio) slipped from third to sixth, earning $8.2 million, raising its total box office receipts to $105.6 million.

Sam Raimi's horror laugher DRAG ME TO HELL (vfx by ReThink VFX, Michael Kaelin & Associates, Tippett Studio and i.e. Effects) clawed into seventh with $7 million, bringing its total box office haul to $28.2 million for Universal. In other sinful cinematic outings, Ron Howard's ANGELS & DEMONS (Sony, Double Negative, CIS Vancouver, The Moving Picture Co., Plowman Craven & Associates and The Senate Visual Effects) placed eighth with $6.55 million, making its cume $116.2 million.

Fox Searchlight's rom-com MY LIFE IN RUINS debuted at #9, earning $3.2 million.

Closing out the top ten was Paramount/MTV Films' DANCE FLICK (vfx from Furious FX and Lola Visual Effects), which spun an additional $2M, bringing its cume to $22.6 million.

DreamWorks Animation's MONSTERS VS. ALIENS did another $270,873 for an 11-week total of $194.9M. CORALINE (Focus Features) made $13,694 and in 18 weeks has earned $75.2M.
