French-owned, British-based production, finance, sales and distribution company Pathe will show the highly-anticipated first footage from the Sylvain Chomet animated film THE ILLUSIONIST at the Marche du Film, per THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Chomet began working on the film in June 2006. He is writing and directing the adaptation of the original and previously unproduced material by Jacques Tati. Pathe said it plans to release the $22 million film in France and the U.K. in 2009. Pathe International will handle worldwide sales.

The film combines traditional 2-D character techniques and CG.

Bob Last and Sally Chomet are producing with Philippe Carcassonne and Jake Eberts executive producing. Pathe and France 3, in association with Canal + is financing the project. It is a Studio Django (U.K.) and Cine B (France) co-production.

The story follows a stage entertainer whose audience is being stolen away by emerging rock stars. Forced to accept increasingly obscure assignments in fringe theaters, garden parties and bars, he meets a young fan who will change his life forever.
