Director Tony Gilroy's The Bourne Legacy, featuring new leading man Jeremy Renner, easily won the domestic box office race with a $40.3 million debut. Even without franchise star Matt Damon, Universal’s spin-off debuted in first place this weekend ahead of the Will Ferrell/Zach Galifianakis political comedy The Campaign and box office behemoth The Dark Knight Rises. Overseas, Legacy brought in $7.8 million in limited release.

In second place, the Warner Bros. R-rated comedy The Campaign had a debut of $27.4 million.

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises came in third at the domestic box office with $19.5 million for a total of $390.1 million. Overseas, the VFX-laden film still rules the charts, bringing in $34.2 million for a foreign gross of $445.3 million.

At number four, Sony’s Hope Springs, starring Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell, opened Wednesday and grossed $15.6 million during the weekend for a five-day debut of $20.1 million

Fox’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days came in fifth on its second weekend at the box office, bringing in $8.2 million for a total of $30.6 million.

Also on its second weekend out, Sony’s reboot of Total Recall sank down to sixth place, earning $8.1 million for a total of $44.2 million.

Fox and Blue Sky’s Ice Age: Continental Drift, the fourth installment in Fox’s prehistoric animated series, came in seventh on its fifth week at the domestic box office, bringing in $6.8 million for a total of $144.1 million. In the international markets, Ice Age 4 saw sales of $16.2 million, pushing its overseas gross total to $623.6 million.

At number eight, Seth MacFarlane’s raunchy comedy Ted earned $3.3 million on its seventh week out for a total of $209.9 at the domestic box office. Overseas, the film shot up to second place, earning $20.3 million for an international gross of $113.2 million.

In ninth place, Summit Entertainment’s Step Up Revolution brought in $2.9 million for a total of $30.2 million.

Rounding out the list at number 10, Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man earned $2.2 million for a domestic total of $255.5 million.
