Audiences Say Yes to The Proposal

Romantic comedy THE PROPOSAL (Disney, vfx by Brickyard VFX) beat out all other competition for the heart of the U.S. audience, winning the Father's Day weekend box office (ending June 21) with $33.6M.

Last week's two-time winner, THE HANGOVER, dropped just 18 percent for the number two slot with $26.8M. In three weeks the Vegas comedy has earned $152.8M for Warner Bros.

Coming in third was Disney-Pixar's animated hit UP as it grossed another $23.5M for a four-week total of $226.3M.

Jack Black-Michael Cera comedy YEAR ONE (Sony) stumbled a bit, opening in fourth place with $19.6M (vfx by Hammerhead Productions).

Dropping from third to fifth place was actioner THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3 (Sony, vfx by Asylum VFX and Eye-Spy Productions) with $12.03M and a two-week cume of $44.1M. Sixth place went to Ben Stiller action comedy NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN (Fox, vfx from CafeFX, Dac Studios, Giant Studios, Image Engine Design and Pixel Playground) with $7.8M and a five-week total of $156.5M.

Paramount's STAR TREK reboot came in seventh, not moving from last week, with $5.5M and a seven-week gross of $240.3M. VFX work was done by ILM, Lola Visual Effects, Evil Eye Pictures, and Svengali Visual Effects.

LAND OF THE LOST dropped to eighth place, bringing in $4.4M for Universal (vfx by CafeFX, Gentle Giant Studios, Hammerhead Productions, Rhythm and Hues and Spectral Motion) and in three weeks has earned $44.05M.

Ninth place (just barely) went to the two-week old IMAGINE THAT (Paramount, vfx from Hammerhead Productions) with $3.29M and a total cume of $11.5M.

Warner Bros.' TERMINATOR SALVATION (vfx by ILM, Matte World Digital, Pixel Liberation Front, Proof, Rising Sun Pictures and Stan Winston Studio) rounds out the top ten this week with $3.28M and a five-week gross of $119.5M.

In animated returns, DreamWorks Animation's MONSTERS VS. ALIENS (Paramount) earned another $165,408 for a 13-week gross of $195.5M. CORALINE (Focus Features) made $9,397 and in 20 weeks has brought in $75.3M. Lionsgate's BATTLE FOR TERRA brought in $493 in four theaters for an eight-week cume of $1.6M
