Eyetronics Creates 3D Scans for Mass Effect Game

Eyetronics provided 3D scanning for the new science-fiction action and RPG game MASS EFFECT. Created by BioWare, the commercially and critically acclaimed developer of JADE EMPIRE and STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC, the hotly anticipated MASS EFFECT, an Xbox 360 title, promises to deliver an immersive, story-driven gameplay experience with stunning cinematic impact, advanced virtual acting and realtime tactical combat.

MASS EFFECT challenges players to travel across an expansive future universe and explore the uncharted edges of the galaxy. As the first humans on this galactic stage, players must uncover a looming threat to civilization. Players can interact with any character in the game via an innovative dialogue system, which allows customized real-time conversations. Players will be able to hear the character's voice and see them talk, expressively conveying emotion and driving the apocalyptic storyline.

Several dozen actors, chosen from the diverse Los Angeles talent pool, were scanned at Eyetronics' Southern California facility over a two-year period. Nick Tesi, vp of operations for Eyetronics in the U.S., stated "BioWare was very hands-on in every session, providing creative direction to elicit a wide range of emotion from the talent. It was of the utmost importance that Eyetronics provide the highly photorealistic look and feel of the characters that the MASS EFFECT gameplay demands."

BioWare's project director Casey Hudson said, "Stunningly life-like characters are critical to the MASS EFFECT experience, and high-quality head scanning from Eyetronics was an essential part of making that happen. Eyetronics offers the technology, speed, experience and flexibility that make working with them the easiest part of making next-gen characters."

Eyetronics recently provided 3D scanning for more than 1,400 Major League Baseball players for the upcoming games from Sony/SCEA (THE SHOW) and 2K Sports (MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL 2K7) and is currently in production on the Midway game STRANGLEHOLD.

Current feature film projects at Eyetronics include NEXT, GRINDHOUSE, THE REAPING, BLADES OF GLORY and THE LAST MIMZY, as well as the recently released THE FOUNTAIN, THE GUARDIAN, THE COVENANT and the Academy Award-nominated POSEIDON.

Eyetronics has also contributed to the hit NBC television series HEROES, as well as the anthology series MASTERS OF SCIENCE FICTION and MASTERS OF HORROR.

Both BioWare and Eyetronics will be exhibiting at GDC: the former at the BioWare Human Resources Booth -- Career Pavilion 1513 and the latter at Booth 5414 NH.
