Extended Return of the King Tops 8th Annual DVD Awards

The Special Extended DVD edition of THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING was the top winner with six trophies at the 8th Annual DVD Awards with Leonard Maltin. The New Line Home Ent. DVD set led all entries in the Grab.com Viewers Choice Award (tied with two others), Best of Show (tied), Blockbuster Theatrical (tie), Authoring Design, Video Presentation and Audio Presentation.

Critic/historian Maltin presided for the sixth consecutive year at the Aug. 30 DVD Awards ceremony, attended by more than 400 at Renaissance Hollywood Hotel as part of the annual Entertainment Media Expo (EMX), co-produced by International Recording Media Assn. and CMP Ent. Media.

Also scoring multiple wins of four more each were Warner Home Video with six half for ULTIMATE MATRIX COLLECTION Buena Vista Home Ent. with five and 20th Century Fox Home Ent. with four, including Grab.com Viewers Choice and Menu Design for THE SIMPSONS: THE COMPLETE FIFTH SEASON, which also was honored as one of three Best of Show entries, as was Warner Home Videos ULTIMATE MATRIX COLLECTION.

Other winners included APPLESEED (Geneon Ent.) for Best Independent Theatrical Release and Best Menu Design Independent Release (along with Blink Digital); LOONEY TUNES GOLDEN COLLECTION: VOLUME 2 (Warner Home Video) for Best Video Presentation; I, ROBOT (2 Disc, Fox Home Ent.) and LIFE AQUATIC (Buena Vista Home Ent.) for Best Major Theatrical New Release; ALADDIN SPECIAL EDITION (Buena Vista Home Ent.) and STAR WARS TRILOGY (Fox Home Ent.) for Best Major Theatrical Catalog Release; and TARZAN II (Buena Vista Home Ent.) for Best Direct-to-Disc Entertainment.

Sony Pictures Home Ent. also was honored with a Technology Pioneer Award, accepted by evp Adrian Alperovich, for its contributions to the development and introduction of the new 2.8-inch Universal Media Disc (UMD) used to play movies, games and music on Sonys PlayStation Portable handheld device. All the major studios are releasing movies on the platform, which was called the most anticipated production launch of 2005.
