For more information contact: Dan McLaughlin (310) 825-5829tein on Thursday,
October 21, 1999 from 7-9 p.m. at ASIFA-Hollywood's Animation Center,
located at 721 South Victory Blvd., in Burbank.
There is no charge to attend this reception. However due to limited
space, reservations are required. To RSVP, please call the ASIFA-Hollywood
office at (818) 842-8330. Born in Moscow in 1941, Norstein is considered
one of the most remarkable animation directors to emerge from the current
generation of Russian animators. Norstein has won numerous awards at
animation festivals all over the world for many of his animated films
including: THE HEDGEHOG IN THE FOG, SEASONS, HERON AND CRANE and THE TALE
OF TALES. He is currently completing production on the film many expect
will be his masterpiece, THE OVERCOAT, based on a short story by Nikolai
Gogol.

ASIFA-Hollywood will also welcome Nina Shorina at the Animation Center on
Thursday, October 28, 1999 from 7-9 p.m. Shorina will present a program
discussing her work, and will screen several of her award-winning animated
films. Born in Moscow, Shorina was a popular child actress who studied
first acting and then filmmaking at the State Film School (VGIK). She began
working at Soyuzmultfilm in 1976 and directed several children's films
including POODLE. Just prior to perestroika Soyuzmultfilm's administration
approved DOOR, a script ostensibly about a boy repairing a door, believing
it would also be a film for children. However, the film Shorina delivered
in 1986 was for a grown up audience, the first of a trilogy including DREAM
and ALTER EGO that would explore the Soviet person's reaction to the
dramatic political changes sweeping the former Soviet Union. Jane Pilling,
author of WOMEN AND ANIMATION, has described Nina Shorina as "one of the
only woman animators in the former Soviet Union to have created a
substantial body of work that ranks her along the established (male) names
in Soviet animation."

Admission to this program is free, but again reservations are required. To
RSVP, please call the ASIFA-Hollywood office at (818) 842-8330.
