UPA Documentary Back on Track
No sooner had AniMazSpot 2012 announced the Magoo at the Alex events, that the question was asked, “When will the UPA documentary feature be finished? ... a fair question, after all, the UPA doc was started nearly a decade ago, and longer if interviews done back in 1978 are counted. However, some of the production team for the UPA doc are now involved with the AniMazSpot festivals, which has slowed things down for the doc.
But, things started slowing down even earlier, when the so-called Taking the Boing ‘Round the World phase began. As the production of the UPA documentary got underway, and the number of interviews started mounting, now over 160, and sequences began to be edited, international animation festivals and others began to want UPA events; such as Zagreb, Ottawa, Anima Mundi, CinAnima, Melbourne, and organizations like ASIFA-Paris, ASIFA-Hollywood, Woodbury University, and Pixar Animation Studio, not to mention the Tribute held at the Egyptian-Hollywood, in 2006. The one in 1978 was at the greatly missed LA film festival, Filmex.
The good news is that the UPA Documentary Feature is back on track with some of the original production team on board, as well as some newcomers from Pixar and the AniMazSpot phalanx of entrants. The first order of business: film some remaining interviews, transcribe the 160+ already in the can, and do a big “man-on-the-street”, or in this case “people-in-the-courtyard” interviews, between events at Magoo at the Alex, on Saturday September 15. After the festival the fine-tuning will begin on the story structure, new animation will be created, and the overall visual treatment will hopefully bring clarity to a complex, but compelling story of the little studio that lead to some major changes in animation in the late 40s and early 50s. And, the ripple effect of the Boing Heard ‘Round the World, should also be very entertaining, as were the live programs Taking the Boing ‘Round the World.
