The Montpelier Cultural Arts Center is presenting a retrospective of the drawings and award winning animated films of Frederic Back. Working primarily alone, Back drew 20,000 drawings over five years to complete the 1987 film, THE MAN WHO PLANTED TREES. Back has won dozens of film festival prizes throughout his career, which began in 1952 for the Société Radio Canada (SRC). During the 1980s, his career peaked with four Academy Award nominations and two wins in 1981 and 1987. His drawings have been exhibited throughout the world, most notably in the galleries of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles and the Cinémathèque Québecoise in Canada. Now retired from the SRC, he continues to make illustrations and films independently.
