Eli Helmers Explode onto Akira

New York Magazine's Vulture blog reports that THE BOOK OF ELI directors Albert and Allen Hughes are in talks to helm Warner Bros.'s live-action adaptation of anime classic AKIRA. Leonardo DiCaprio's production house, Appian Way, is producing with Andrew Lazar.

Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby have penned the script, following a biker gang leader who gets wrapped up in a government conspiracy when his best friend is taken for a psychic experiment. Katsuhiro Otomo’s 2,182-page manga will the source of two films. The first three volumes will make up the first film.

Warner hopes to have the film in theaters next year.
