Efron Fires Up Comic & Sci-Fi Projects

In an effort to shed his HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL roots, Zac Efron has signed onto two adult projects, reports Deadline.com.

The young heartthrob will star in a feature adaptation of the Image Comic, FIRE. Graphic novel author Brian Michael Bendis will pen the screenplay, which tells the story of a college student recruited by the CIA who discovers he's part of an expendable agent program. Neal Moritz and Circle of Confusion’s David Engel are the producers with Efron and Alchemy Entertainment’s Jason Barrett exec producing.

At Warner Bros, Efron is ready to headline a BACK TO THE FUTURE-esque flick. The project combines a pitch from scribes Tim Calpin and Kevin Jakubowski and a film called ALGORITHM being developed by FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL director Nick Stoller. Mark Gordon and Bryan Zuriff are the producers alongside exec producers Alan Riche, Efron and Barrett.
