California State University, Chico has purchased 100 seats of Bauhaus Software’s Mirage product. Integrated directly into the university’s graphics and animation curriculum, Mirage will enable students to learn classical and modern 2D animation, in a completely paperless environment.

CSU Chico staff and instructors spent two weeks with students at the California State University Summer Arts Festival, creating a two-minute 2D animated short, BASS ACKWARDS, using nothing but Mirage animation software. The traditional-style short was produced by nine students along with veteran animators Chuck Harvey and Rusty Mills. Beginning with only rough storyboards — and having no previous animation experience — the nine students produced two minutes of professional quality animation in just two weeks.

“Mirage has proven itself as the leading 2D animation and effects system on the market,” said Rick Vertolli, CSU professor/animation supervisor. “After a tremendous success this summer using Mirage at the summer arts festival, we look forward to integrating it into our permanent curriculum.”

“California State Chico has a renowned animation curriculum, and we’re thrilled to see Mirage become a part of it,” said Bauhaus ceo Dan Kraus. “With this installation, CSU Chico has now become the largest single educational installation of Mirage in the world.”

Bauhaus Mirage 1.5 is available for $695 through the Bauhaus website and authorized distributors. Bauhaus Mirage is available for both Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X.
