DVD Premiere Awards Honor Hobbits

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING picked up five awards at the third annual DVD Premiere Awards, including the award for Best Overall New Extra Features in a New Release. Other winners at the January 14, 2003 event, held at Los Angeles' Wiltern Theatre, included Disney's THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME II (Best Animated DVD premiere movie and Best Original Song); Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (Best Overall New Extra Features, Library Title); and Disney/Pixar's MONSTERS, INC. (Best Menu Design). Another big winner was Canada's Mainframe Entertainment, which took home the award for Best Animated Character Performance (in a DVD premiere movie) for the character Gothel in Mattel/Artisan's BARBIE AS RAPUNZEL. The animated feature was a follow-up to BARBIE IN THE NUTCRACKER, which Mainframe also produced for Mattel and which earned the 2001 DVD Premiere Award for Best Animated Video Premiere Movie. The Special Extended Edition of THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING released on November 12, 2002 by New Line also won for Best New Enhanced or Reconstructed Movie Scenes, Best Original Retrospective Documentary, New Release and Best Audio Commentary, New Release. Consumers in an online poll also named the DVD Best Special Edition of the Year (New Release) for the first AOL Movies DVD Premiere Award. The 4-disc Platinum Series Extended Edition of LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING contains an extended version of the film with over 30 minutes of never-before-seen footage and 50 additional minutes of newly-recorded score.
