Disney Feature Animation to Layoff 20% of Staff

Walt Disney Co. will cut about 20% of its staff in the feature animation division. Animation Guild business representative Steve Hulett told REUTERS that between 70 to 140 people would lose their jobs either at the end of February or beginning of March. Employees will be informed of who will be cut on Dec. 11 or 12, 2006, Hulett said.

A Walt Disney Studios spokesperson, said, "After a careful review process, the management team at Walt Disney Animation has determined that each film will dictate its own appropriate production schedule. The result of this necessitated a reduction in staff. As a result, it will be necessary to eliminate a number of current positions. We are committed to do every thing we can in order to assist everyone during this transition period. Once notified, employees will have up to 60 days to find new employment. Disney will also help provide job placement opportunities."

Production is wrapping on MEET THE ROBINSONS, which is due out March 30, 2007, while AMERICAN DOG's production is ramping up to meet its scheduled 2008 release.
