Director Guillermo del Toro told TheOneRing.net that he has walked away from directing THE HOBBIT. After working on the project for two years with exec producer Peter Jackson, the HELLBOY director decided to leave the production due to MGM's financial problems delaying the start of production indefinitely.
Del Toro will continue to co-write the scripts for the two films with Jackson, Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh. All parties will sit down with New Line and Warner Bros. to work out the transition to a new director.
