Cyborg 009 Comes to Cartoon Network

Cyborg 009 will join Cartoon Network's "Toonami" line-up on Monday, June 30, 2003, airing weekdays at 6:00 pm. Combining elements of JAMES BOND movies and ASTRO BOY, CYBORG 009 follows the adventures of a world-class sprinter who, after being seriously injured, is kidnapped by the Black Ghost, a villain plotting to take over the world. The athlete is rescued by a kind-hearted professor, who turns him into the ninth series of cyborg warriors that were originally designed as "super soldiers" to help carry out the plot to conquer the world, but are now dedicated to stopping them.

The series was developed from Shotaro Ishinomori's 1964 CYBORG 009 manga reflecting the conflict and harsh conditions during the Cold War. Ishinomori is considered one of Japan's great creators, contributing many animated TV heroes from his well-known live-action dramas such as MASKED RIDERS, KIKAIDER and POWER RANGERS, THE SECRET WARRIORS.

Cartoon Network has acquired 26 episodes of CYBORG 009, produced by Ishimori Productions. "Toonami," Cartoon Network's popular afternoon action-adventure programming block, airs weekday afternoons from 5:00-7:00 pm featuring programs like DRAGONBALL Z, RUROUNI KENSHIN and JUSTICE LEAGUE. Throughout the two-hour programming block, Toonami intermittently features popular music, computer-generated 3D animation segments and the block's host, TOM, an animated character who inhabits the space vessel Absolution.
