The second annual Metreon Festival of Anime kicks off in San Francisco this weekend, and the festival highlight is the West Coast premiere of Columbia/Tri-Star's COWBOY BEBOP: THE MOVIE. Set on Mars in the year 2071, COWBOY BEBOP: THE MOVIE is based on the popular animated television series by Japanese director Shinichiro Watanabe, which airs on Cartoon Network in the U.S. The film is scheduled for theatrical release in early 2003. Other festival premieres include MELTYLANCER and ARGENTOSOMA and the festival will also be screening popular anime films such as CHAR'S COUNTERATTACK, MOBILE FIGHTER G GUNDAM and LOVE HINA.
