Claudio Cappon New Head at RAI

RAI has upped Claudio Cappon, to the Italian pubcaster's top position, director general, according to the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.

Cappon, 53, held the same top operative post at RAI from February 2001 to March 2002. Most recently, Cappon had been president of Italy's TV producers' association, ATP.

HR reports that Cappon's appointment is a direct consequence of Italy's recent political shift, since RAI management is politically picked. Cappon Alfredo Meocci, who had been installed as RAI's director general by the conservative Silvio Berlusconi-led government, which lost elections in April to a center-left coalition.

Under Berlusconi, RAI came under fire for muzzling journalists with a supposedly leftist bent and censored political satire. Leftists hail Cappon's return as the start of a new regime at the country's top broadcaster.
