Niko 2 In the Works
Helsinki's Animaker, Hamburg's Ulysses Filmproduktion, Copenhagen's A. Film Production and Galway's Magma Prods. are developing NIKO 2 — FAMILY AFFAIRS, reports Variety. Unlike the original NIKO AND THE WAY TO THE STARS, the follow-up will be 3-D.
The first film told the story of a young reindeer who sets out to save Santa. The Weinstein Co. released the film in the U.S. on DVD as THE FLIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS.
The new film finds Niko adjusting to his mother getting remarried and having a new stepbrother.
Animaker co-owner Hannu Tuomainen will produce. He co-wrote the script with Marteinn Thorisson. First film's director Kari Juusonen will helm with Dane Jorgen Lerdam. The sequel will have a budget of Euros 7.3 million ($10 million).
Germany's Telepool will handle worldwide rights. Nordisk Film will debut the production throughout Scandinavia on Oct. 12, 2012.
The project will be presented at Cartoon Movie this week.
