Neil Gaiman (CORALINE) will write English scripts for a Chinese-produced 3-D trilogy based on the legend of the Monkey King, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Gaiman will write a treatment before producer Zhang Jizhong brings in a director, Chinese and English-speaking cast and CG company.

Zhang has estimated the budget will be around $300 million and expects to gain most of it from Chinese investors, but won't rule out foreign funding.

Gaiman and Zhang have had talks with James Cameron and Guillermo Del Toro.

The most well known legend in Chinese literature, JOURNEY TO THE WEST, follows a Buddhist monk on a pilgrimage over China to India.

Zhang previously produced a CG animated version of JOURNEY.
