The Cell Slips Behind Live-Action Leaders

With newcomers like thriller THE WATCHER and black comedy NURSE BETTY finishing #1 and #2 respectively, THE CELL slipped to fourth at the U.S. box office. Finishing right after the former two-week champion BRING IT ON, THE CELL, with primary visual effects by Toybox, grossed another US$3.65 million, raising the films cume to $51.34 million. Finally fading at #5, SPACE COWBOYS made 51% less than last weekend with a gross of $3.34 million. The senior citizen space saga, with primary visual effects by ILM, has floated $78.83 million thus far. Holding on to sixth place, WHAT LIES BENEATH scared up an additional $2.77 million. The ghostly gasp inducer, with primary visual effects by Sony Pictures Imageworks, has made a killing at the box office with a cume of $142.4 million. Finishing off the top ten was Dimensions HIGHLANDER: ENDGAME, with a weekend take of $1.92 million. The fourth installment in the HIGHLANDER series has grossed $9.05 million so far. Falling out of the top ten to #12, NUTTY PROFESSOR II: THE KLUMPS landed another $1.63 million. The buffet bonanza, with primary visual effects by Double Negative Ltd., has a giant cume of $117 million. Down a spot to #17, BLESS THE CHILD rescued an additional $805,393. The occult eye-popper, with primary visual effects by Centropolis Effects and Manex Visual Effects, has raked in $27.43 million thus far. Quickly descending the charts after its debut in #1, HOLLOW MAN finished in 18th place with a gross of $770,511. The transparent thriller, with primary visual effects by The Ranch Entertainment, Tippett Studios and Sony Imageworks, has materialized $71.34 million in total. Holding on to 19th place, THE PERFECT STORM rode the wave to another $634,000. The cyclone saga, with primary visual effects by ILM, has caught $178.7 million so far. Other animated and special effects laden films finishing in the top fifty were: X-MEN at #22, with a gross of $574,629 and a cume of $154 million; GLADIATOR at #24, with a gross of $483,001 and a cume of $184.2 million; MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 at #26, with a gross of $369,260 and a cume of $214.4 million; CHICKEN RUN at #28, with a gross of $339,010 and a cume of $104.6 million; GONE IN 60 SECONDS at #29, with a gross of $256,349 and a cume of $99.23 million; DINOSAUR at #30, with a gross of $256,349 and a cume of $136.1 million; THE PATRIOT at #31, with a gross of $248,485 and a cume of $112.1 million; SCARY MOVIE at #34, with a gross of $199,301 and a cume of $149.6 million; POKEMON THE MOVIE 2000 at #37, with a gross of $181,216 and a cume of $43.32 million; GODZILLA 2000 at #38, with a gross of $155,416 and a cume of $9.63 million; T-REX: BACK TO THE CRETACEOUS at #39, with a gross of $143,580 and a cume of $34.12 million; THE ADVENTURES OF ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE at #42, with a gross of $117,045 and a cume of $25.78 million; FREQUENCY at #45, with a gross of $84,394 and a cume of $44.98 million; ALIEN ADVENTURE at #48, with a gross of $70,678 and a cume of $2.73 million; and THOMAS AND THE MAGIC RAILROAD at #50, with a gross of $66,833 and a cume of $15.97 million.
