The Cell Captures The Top Spot At The US Box Office

With the summer money flow slowing down, THE CELL captured the top spot in another fairly low ticket sale weekend in the U.S. The ALICE IN WONDERLAND meets SILENCE OF THE LAMBS thriller, with primary visual effects by Toybox, grossed US$17.52 million. Showing that old guys have legs, SPACE COWBOYS settled in third with a gross of $9.48 million. Falling a spot behind the debut of the stage comedy film THE ORIGINAL KINGS OF COMEDY, COWBOYS, with primary visual effects by ILM, has rounded up $53.78 million thus far. Rising a slot to finish fifth, WHAT LIES BENEATH floated another $6.76 million. The Harrison Ford fright fest, with primary visual effects by SPI, has grossed an enormous $123.4 million. Coming in sixth, NUTTY PROFESSOR II: THE KLUMPS chalked up another $6.31 million. With primary visual effects by Double Negative Ltd., the robust romp has become the 12th film of the year to make the nine-digit mark with a cume of $104.3 million. Disappearing, HOLLOW MAN plummeted from first to seventh with a gross of $6.01 million. The transparent thriller, with primary visual effects by The Ranch Entertainment, Tippett Studios and Sony Imageworks, has a cume of $61.58 million. Finishing out the top ten, BLESS THE CHILD scared up $4.84 million. The Satanic scare saga, with primary visual effects by Centropolis Effects and Manex Visual Effects, advanced its 10-day cume to $18.01 million. Debuting at 11th and bringing the rubber-suited lizard back to the States, GODZILLA 2000 managed to gross $4.41 million. Coming in at #12, X-MEN grossed another $2.52 million. The superhero saga, with primary visual effects by Cinesite, CORE Digital, Digital Domain, Hammerhead Productions, Kleiser-Walczak Co., Matte World and POP Film, mutated its cume to $148.6 million. Slipping three slots to 13th, THE PERFECT STORM washed up an additional $1.81 million. The typhoon thriller, with primary visual effects by ILM, has lifted its cume to $173.6 million. Down to 14th place, SCARY MOVIE scrounged up another $1.29 million. The slasher send-off, with primary visual effects by Centropolis Effects, advanced its cume to $147.2 million. Slipping from 13th to 17th, THE PATRIOT piled up an additional $982,544. The Revolutionary War revamp, with primary visual effects by Centropolis Effects, DOD and CFX, has amassed a bounty of $110 million thus far. In at #18, CHICKEN RUN raked in $902,870. The few good hens, with stop-motion animation by Aardman Animations and 3D animation by Computer Film Company, London, have made an amazing $101.8 million. THOMAS AND THE MAGIC RAILROAD pulled in at #19, with a gross of $572,901. Hoping for better days on video where the THOMAS series is steaming, the little engine has only made $14.58 million on the big screen. Rounding out the top twenty, POKEMON 2000 picked up another $520,899, bringing its cume to $41.92 million. Other animated and special effects laden films finishing in the top fifty were: GLADIATOR at #23, with a gross of $296,832 and a cume of $182.1 million; THE ADVENTURES OF ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE at #25, with a gross of $220,205 and a cume of $25.03 million; FREQUENCY at #29, with a gross of $179,471 and a cume of $44.44 million; GONE IN 60 SECONDS at #33, with a gross of $156,557 and a cume of $96.73 million; MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 at #35, with a gross of $144,508 and a cume of $212.8 million; T-REX: BACK TO THE CRETACEOUS at #37, with a gross of $139,885 and a cume of $33.48 million; and ALIEN ADVENTURE at #44, with a gross of $75,085 and a cume of $2.37 million.
