Cartoon Saloon Gains Funding for Kells Follow-Up

Cartoon Saloon has secured co-production partners for its follow-up to its Oscar-nominated THE SECRET OF KELLS, titled SONG OF THE SEA, reports Variety.

Cartoon Saloon has secured co-production partners for its follow-up to its Oscar-nominated THE SECRET OF KELLS, titled SONG OF THE SEA, reports Variety. Denmark-based Noerlum Studios, Belgium-based Big Farm and Paris-based Super Prods. will co-produce.

Noerlum will provide half of the animation for the film. Big Farm, which is a joint venture between Digital Graphics Studios and Luxembourg-based Melusine, will have DGS contributing CG, effects, compositing, ink & paint and stereoscopic 3-D. Super Prods. will provide post-production and music.

KELLS-director Tomm Moore is helming and is currently working on final storyboards. Moore co-wrote the script with Will Collins.

TV Paint will be used for the film. Moore told the trade the 3-D elements would have a pop-up book effect.

Optimum Releasing will release the film in the U.K. and Ireland.

The project is budgeted at €5.3 million ($7.4 million).

The story follows the young Saoirse, the last selkie, who runs away from her grandmother with the mission to free creatures of folklore that are trapped in modern society.
