Cartoon Network Swims With Anime Acquisitions

Cartoon Network is expanding the range of its popular Adult Swim block with the acquisition of three anime series: LUPIN THE THIRD, REIGN and TRIGUN. LUPIN THE THIRD follows the adventures of globetrotting crook Lupin, who is aided in his adventures by his two partners, expert marksman Jigen and samurai master Goemon. Lupin travels around the world stealing extraordinary treasures and matching wits with rival thief, Fujiko, all the while staying one step ahead of Inspector Zenigata. Taking place in the distant future on a deserted planet, TRIGUN stars Vash the Stampede, a gunfighter with a large bounty on his head. Finally, REIGN is a 21st century science-fiction retelling of the legend of Alexander the Great. Adult Swim will air five times per week beginning Sunday, January 12, 2003. Airing from 11:00 pm to 2:00 am Sunday-Thursday, the block will offer the series FUTURAMA, COWBOY BEBOP and INUYASHA, as well as quirky original animated series including HOME MOVIES, AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE and HARVEY BIRDMAN, ATTORNEY AT LAW.

While prime time animation might have disappeared from the big three, it is alive and thriving on cable. Rick DeMott reports on where the sauciest of television animation can be found.
