Cars Races to Victory

Disney/Pixars CARS didnt break any records (earning less than its last three predecessors.), but still managed a respectable bow of $60.1M to lead the box office pack for the weekend ended June 11, 2006. Its the sixth best opening for an animated feature and fourth best overall for Pixar.

Universals THE-BREAK UP fell to second in its sophomore weekend, pulling in $20.3M and a cume of $73.9M. Following in third with $16M was X-MEN: THE LAST STAND. With vfx from Cinesite, Framestore CFC, MPC and Weta Digital, among others, the third entry in the Fox franchise currently has $202.2M to its credit to take the summer lead. Debuting in fourth with $16M was Foxs remake of THE OMEN (with vfx from Cinesite), which brought its first week total to $36.3M. Sonys THE DA VINCI CODE (with vfx from Cinesite, Framestore CFC, MPC and Weta Digital, among others) slid to fifth with $10.4M and $189.1M. DreamWorks animated comedy, OVER THE HEDGE, was right behind in sixth with $10.2M and a cume of $130.2M. Debuting in seventh for Picturehouse was Robert Altmans A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION with $4.5M. Eighth place went to Paramounts MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III (with vfx from ILM), which captured another $3M for a tally of $127.4M. RV finished ninth for Sony with $1.9M and a cume of $64.9M. Warner Bros. POSEIDON (with vfx from ILM and MPC) came in 10th with $1.8M and $54.9M. Box office information obtained from boxofficemojo.com.
