Variety reports James Cameron's underwater survival drama, SANCTUM, has secured funding. Wayfare Entertainment has committed to finance the $30M 3-D film that plans to shoot with James Cameron’s AVATAR cameras and 3-D technology.
Alister Grierson will direct from the script penned by Andrew Wight and John Garvin. Wight previously collaborated with Cameron on ALIENS OF THE DEEP and GHOSTS OF THE ABYSS. FilmNation's Glen Basner is handling offshore sales and CAA will sell the domestic rights. FilmNation's Aaron Ryder is Co-producer.
SANCTUM is a fictional drama inspired by Wight's own near-death expedition with 15 divers into a remote underwater cave system, below Australia's Nullarbor Plain.
The stormy ordeal was recounted in the 1989 documentary, NULLARBOR DREAMING.
SANCTUM is set to film in Australia late 2009.
