Caligari Announces Big Break Animation Winners

Caligari, award-winning producer of 3D modeling and animation software, released the winners of its Big Break 2003 animation contest. The contest was designed to showcase the talents of artists and animators using Caligari's trueSpace 3D modeling and animation software package and illustrate what's possible using inexpensive software, an ordinary desktop PC and a healthy dose of talent and imagination.

Seattle-based Spencer Britton, mechanical engineer by day and animator by night, won the Big Break's "Art Form" category with his animated short, BOMBASTIC, a fun look into the adventures of the life-forms on an alien planet. Saul Greenberg, a London-based painter of set designs and other industrial projects, won the "Story Form" category for his beautiful animated short, UMMM, a surreal, improbably-lush study of animators' block.

"The ability to create beautiful, evocative animations is no longer limited to movie studios or professional animators," said Caligari president/founder, Roman Ormandy. "These two animations alone are proof, not to mention the many other terrific animations submitted to this contest. We are continually overwhelmed by the quality of imagery produced by people using trueSpace."

"Computers have made so many things possible," added Greenberg. "Anyone can produce anything these days, it's just a matter of application and time." Greenberg created UMMM primarily on his laptop as he traveled between assignments rendering completed images on "the closest desktop" as time allowed. Britton also produced BOMBASTIC during nights and weekends, using plug-ins including Motion Studio and Primal Particles FX from Primitive Itch and Space-Time Morph from Mente Magica for fine-tuning. Britton is a big fan of the trueSpace interface saying: "it's fast and easy to use, particularly on a dual monitor set-up." Britton says his inspiration for animations is to make people laugh using unusual characters and machines with universally familiar qualities.
