Roommate Beats Sanctum at U.S. Box Office

Screen Gems' THE ROOMMATE rented the top spot at the U.S. box office for the weekend of Feb. 4-6, 2011. The roomie from hell flick brought in $15.6 million.

James Cameron-produced SANCTUM dove into second with $9.23 million. Iloura provided the visual effects for underwater cave exploration film.

Paramount's NO STRINGS ATTACHED tied up another $8.4 million in third. The romcom has a cume of $51.8 million.

The Weinstein Co.'s THE KING'S SPEECH moved up a slot to fourth, talking up an additional $8.31 million. With visual effects from Molinare Studio and Pixion, the award-winning drama has amassed $84.1 million to date.

Sony's THE GREEN HORNET pulled into fifth with $6.1 million. With vfx from CEG Media, CIS Hollywood, Luma Pictures and Proof, the superhero spoof has captured $87.2 million thus far.

Last week's #1, New Line's THE RITE, plummeted to sixth, dropping off 62.4% from its first week in theaters. With vfx from Filmefex Studio, Kristyan Mallett Fx, Leonardo Cruciano Workshop, M.A.G. Special Effects, Method Studios and Multifilm Special Effects, the exorcism chiller added $5.57 million to its $23.7 million cume.

CBS Films' THE MECHANIC also took a tumble from third to seventh, contracting another $5.37 million. The assassins' tale has a cume of $20.1 million.

Paramount's TRUE GRIT roped an additional $4.75 million in eighth. With vfx from Creature Effects, Luma Pictures, Special FX International, Tinsley Studio and Wolf Stuntworks, the Oscar-nominated Western has total receipts of $155 million.

Universal's THE DILEMMA brought in $3.45 million in ninth. The Ron Howard comedy has taken in $45.7 million thus far.

Closing out the top ten, Fox Searchlight's BLACK SWAN swam away with $3.4 million. With vfx from Look Effects, Darren Aronofsky's psychological thriller has earned $95.9 million to date.
