Rhythm & Hues Studio is set to open a Vancouver location before January 9th, reports Variety. The El Segundo, CA-based company will begin with a small staff, but hopes to eventually reach as many as 150 artists. The decision provides the company with the ability to offer productions the Canadian tax credits. The firm is looking for a location to base their operations.

Additionally, the vfx studio will be expanding its business in Asia. In 2012, Rhythm & Hues will open a third facility in India to go along with its locations in Mumbai and Hyderabad. The company also has a branch in Malaysia.

Wow, such an informative and concise repartee on the topic of international commerce. While I can understand your dismay, there is no need for alarm. With the eminent demise of the US dollar and California's budget woes, the industry there should be able to compete for years to come. VFX in Canada is not getting cheaper as the cost of living in Vancouver is quite high and the appreciation of the Loonie is offsetting some of the tax credit gains. As an LA native, I find no issue with companies opening foreign offices. It is just the evolution of the industry from local to international. There are examples of companies such as MPC, Prime Focus(formerly Frantic Films), and Pixomondo which have bought or opened offices in Los Angeles to be closer to Hollywood. If you choose to maintain your protectionist attitude, I might refer you to the auto industry for example and the history of automotive manufacturing in the US. While the vfx industry is on a much more accelerated evolutionary cycle, I believe we are nearing the 66% threshold of market saturation, where as the automotive industry is currently at 100% market saturation. I caution you though. Protectionism is counterproductive at it's core. Focus on doing the best work of any market in the world and there will always be work available in your area. You should however give Vancouver the benefit of the doubt. It is a wonderful area of the world and it's people are quite nice. Although, they may not want you.

Scumbags. It wasn't enough that they have their studios in India and Mumbai......Taking away jobs from abundant artists in California... Now they're going to outsource their cheap ass shit to Canada, and Asia.

You should be fucking embarrassed Rhythm and Hues. Shame on you.

Cant wait to see the magical quality that comes out of those 3rd world shitholes on Chipmunks part 5 and Scooby Doo part 93.

Douchebags.
