North Carolina-based SouthPeak Interactive, a former SAS subsidiary that produced computer games, has spawned Alternate Route Studios, a new F/X house. Originally created to produce proprietary technology that promoted "feature film quality" gaming, SouthPeak transformed into Alternate Route after its core technology was sold off last year. Executive director Susan Ellis said, "We are aiming our sights on national spots and features. As part of a proof of concept, we pitched to produce SAS' first national campaign. Although the creative was initially sent to Digital Domain, we knew the integration of live-action, CGI and miniatures was right up our alley. The quality of the finished product proved to us that we should get in this game." The facilities include two 4,500-square-foot studios, two online digital video suites, AVID, AVID DS compositing system, a 12,000-square-foot set and model shop, a 70-machine render farm and four audio suites. Currently, the studio employs 76 full-time staffers.
