Couples Retreat Commands Box Office on Opening Weekend

COUPLES RETREAT came out swinging at the box office on its opening weekend, Oct. 9-11, raking in $35 million for Universal. Sony's ZOMBIELAND dropped to the #2 spot in its second week, earning $15 million.

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, now in its fourth week, dropped to third and brought in $12 million over the weekend. Buena Vista's TOY STORY & TOY STORY 2 re-release in 3-D came in at #4, earning $7.7 million during its first week.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY surged from #20 last week to #5 over the weekend, raking in $7 million for Paramount. SURROGATES dropped to sixth in its third week, earning $4.1 million. WB's THE INVENTION OF LYING came in at #7 for its second week, earning $3.4 million. WHIP IT from Fox came in at #8, earning $2.8 million in its second week.

CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY from Overture came in ninth, earning $2.7 million. FAME rounded out the top ten, raking in $2.6 million for MGM.
