Box Office Report: Zero Dark Thirty in Top Spot
Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty came out on top at the domestic box office this weekend, bringing in $24 million for Sony and Annapurna Pictures as the film expanded nationwide following its nomination for an Academy Award for best picture.
In the number two spot, parody film Haunted House made $18.8 million for Open Road Films, IM Global and Endgame Entertainment. Starring Marlon Wayans, the film is a parody of the Paranormal Activity franchise and other found-footage films.
Warner Bros.' Gangster Squad placed third, earning $16.7 million. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, and starring Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Michael Pena and Emma Stone, Gangster Squad revolves around a special task force formed by the Los Angeles Police Department during the late 1940s to fight mobsters.
Django Unchained, from the Weinstein Co., came in fourth place, bringing in $11.1 million for a total of $125.4 million.
In fifth place, Tom Hooper's Les Miserables, brought Universal $10.1 million for a total of $119.2.
Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey came in at number six, earning New Line and MGM $9.1 million for a total of $278.1 million.
In seventh place, Steven Spielberg's historical drama Lincoln, from DreamWorks and Disney, brought in $6.3 million for a total of $152.6 million.
Twentieth Century Fox family comedy Parental Guidance placed eighth, grossing $6.1 million at the domestic box office for a total of $60.7 million.
Texas Chainsaw 3D sank down to ninth place, with the 3D slasher pic earning Lionsgate $5.2 million for a total of $30.8 million.
Rounding out the list at number 10, The Weinstein Co’s Silver Linings Playbook, directed by David O. Russell, made $5 million for a total of $41.3 million.
