Box Office Report: The Lorax Defeats John Carter

Universal and Illumination Entertainment's environmentally themed Dr. Seuss' The Lorax held first place at the box office for the second week straight, earning $39.1 million for a total of $122 million.

Disney’s sci-fi epic John Carter, which opened on Friday, opened to an estimated $30.6 million. The 3D feature cost $250 million to produce.

Warner Bros. found footage comedy Project X came in third this weekend with an estimated $11.6 million for a total of $40.1 million.

In fourth place, Silent House, distributed by Open Road Films for Liddell Entertainment, tied with Relativity Media's Act of Valor. Both films earned $7 million this weekend, bringing Act of Valor’s total to $56.1 million.

Coming in at number six was Paramount & DreamWorks’ A Thousand Words, starring Eddie Murphy, which opened to $6.4 million.

Universal’s Safe House slipped to seventh place, bringing in $5 million for a total of $115.8 million.

Screen Gems’ The Vow, starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, moved down to eighth place with $4 million for a total of $117.6 million.

Fox’s This Means War came in ninth place, earning $3.8 million for a total of $46.9 million.

In tenth place, the 3D feature Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, from New Line and Warner Bros., earned $3.7 million for a total of $90.7 million.
