Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games made box office history this weekend as the big screen adaptation of the immensely popular young adult novel opened to $155 million, which ranks third all-time behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($169.2 million) and The Dark Knight ($158.4 million).

Sony and MGM’s Jonah Hill-Channing Tatum comedy 21 Jump Street took second place with $21.3 million, earning a total of $71 million over its 10 days in theaters.

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, from Universal and Illumination Entertainment, came in third place, earning $13.1 million in its fourth week in theaters, with a total of $177.3 million.

In fourth place, Disney’s sci-fi 3D epic John Carter earned $5 million thins weekend, bringing its 17-day total to $62.3 million.

Relativity Media's Act of Valor held fifth place over the weekend with $1.95 million for a total of $65.9 million.

Warner Bros. found footage comedy Project X came in at number six, earning $1.95 million for a total of $51.8 million.

Paramount and DreamWorks’ A Thousand Words, starring Eddie Murphy, dropped to seventh place with $1.93 million for a total of $14.9 million.

In eighth place, October Baby, from Samuel Goldwyn Films, opened with $1.7 million.

Universal’s Safe House slipped down to ninth place, earning $1.39 million for a total of $122.6 million.

Rounding out the list at number 10, the 3D feature, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, from New Line and Warner Bros., made $1.37 million for a total of $97.2 million.
