Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which opened December 14, held on to the top spot at the box office in its third weekend with $32.9 million. To date the film has grossed $222.7 million in North America and upwards of $600 million globally.

In second place, Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, from The Weinstein Co., took in $30.7 million during the weekend for a six-day total of $64 million.

Universal's Les Mis, directed by Tom Hooper, came in third, posting weekend earnings of $28 million for a six-day domestic total of $67.4 million and a worldwide haul of $116.2 million. Featuring an ensemble cast led by Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried, Les Mis cost $60 million to produce.

Family comedy Parental Guidance -- starring Billy Crystal, Bette Midler and Marisa Tomei -- has held steady at number four since debuting Christmas Day. From 20th Century Fox, the $25 million movie took in $14.8 million for the weekend for a six-day total of $29.6 million.

Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher has done solid business since rolling out December 21. The Paramount feature grossed $14 million in its second weekend holding at number five for a domestic total of $44.7 million.

Coming in sixth place, Universal's This Is 40, from Judd Apatow also opened December 21, grossing $13.2 million over the weekend for a total take so far of $37.1 million.

In its eighth weekend, Steven Spielberg's historical drama Lincoln, from DreamWorks and Disney, came in seventh place with earnings of $7.5 million for a total of $132.3 million.

In eighth place, Barbra Streisand-Seth Rogen comedy The Guilt Trip grossed $6.7 million for the weekend for a domestic total of $21.1 million.

Disney's re-release of Pixar's Monsters, Inc. held onto ninth place, taking in $6.3 million for a total of $18.5 million.

Rounding out the list at number 10, DreamWorks Animation’s holiday-themed Rise of the Guardians made $4.9 million for a total of $90.2 million.

The 3D feature Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Apart, directed by Andrew Adamson and executive produced by James Cameron, has grossed $7.4 million so far for distributor Paramount, placing number 15 on the box office chart.
